The practical answer
Choose between a freelance web designer and an agency by the project’s scope, the skills required, the communication model, and the support you need. Team size alone does not determine the quality of the website.
Match the partner to the scope
A single-location restaurant with a clear menu and reservation integration may need a different team from a hospitality group with several properties, multilingual content, and multiple approval layers. Start with the pages, tools, and decisions involved. Then determine who needs to deliver them.
For a Los Angeles business, local familiarity can help a partner ask useful questions about neighborhood positioning and arrival details. It is still important to examine the actual work. A local address does not demonstrate that someone can build the booking flow or content system your team needs.
Understand how communication will work
An independent designer may offer direct access to the person doing the work. An agency may organize communication through a project manager and several specialists. Either model can work if responsibilities, availability, and approvals are clear. Ask who will attend feedback conversations and who can resolve a development question.
Describe how your own team operates. If the chef, manager, and owner all approve menu content, designate someone to consolidate feedback. A partner cannot keep a project predictable when three separate people provide conflicting instructions without a final decision maker.
Questions for the first conversation
- Who handles strategy, copy, design, development, and integration?
- Which deliverables are included, and what does the business supply?
- How are feedback rounds and changes handled?
- Who tests the site and approves launch?
- What support and update options exist afterward?
Review work by customer task
Open a portfolio example and try to find the information a customer would need. Can you read the services, understand the location, and reach booking? Check on a phone as well as a desktop. Beautiful screenshots are useful for visual direction, but a functioning site tells you more about interaction quality.
Ask what the designer or agency actually contributed. A project can involve photography, branding, copy, development, and third-party systems. Understanding the role prevents you from assuming that every element in an example will be part of your proposal.
Ask about capacity, continuity, and ownership
An independent partner’s availability matters; an agency’s assigned team and handoff process matter too. Ask how the work will be supported during absence, what happens after launch, and how you obtain business-controlled access to the domain and accounts. These are ordinary project questions, not reasons to favor one model automatically.
Compare proposals with the same scope. If one includes content planning and launch support and another does not, the prices are not directly comparable. My web design services guide explains the deliverables worth clarifying.
What it means to work directly with me
Cosmic Field Studio is my one-person creative studio. I personally handle strategy, design, development, and setup, with your approval before launch. You work directly with me throughout. You can get to know me in the about section and explore my work in the portfolio before getting in touch.
If that direct working relationship fits your business, prepare your goals and current tools with the project brief checklist. If your project needs a larger specialist team, make that requirement explicit early so you can assess a suitable delivery model.
Common questions
Is a freelancer always cheaper than an agency?
No. Pricing depends on scope, experience, responsibilities, and support. Compare itemized proposals for the same work rather than assuming a price from the business model.
What should I look for in a portfolio?
Look for relevant customer journeys and test the live work when available. Ask about the partner’s role, the project scope, and how the website was maintained.
